“Your eyes may be the window to your soul, but it is often your hands that give your age away” Hallie, patient of Dr. Grossman in Harpers Bazaar Magazine
There are two major changes in the hands that happen with aging. Changes in the skin become evident as brown spots, wrinkling, texture changes and possibly even pre skin cancers or skin cancers. And hollowing, or loss of volume in the hands which reveals itself as more prominent blood vessels, bony hands and easy bruising.
Skin changes are best treated with lasers.
IPL can improve some brown spots and discoloration. The light fractures the excess pigment within the cells in the skin, causing the spots to darken and ultimately flake off. Combining IPL with Levulan can cause not only a cosmetic improvement, but a reduction in the amount of pre-cancers in the skin as well.
Fractionated lasers will improve not only the brown spots and discoloration but will also improve texture, lines and pre-cancers. My two favorites are the Active FXand Fraxel Dual. Here the laser vaporizes small spots of skin, leaving normal skin bridges between. The skin bridges cause the skin to heal more quickly and with less risk of complications. The Active FX treatment can achieve significant improvement in often a single treatment. The Fraxel treatment is gentler with a quicker recovery time. However, more than one treatment is often needed for the best results. I will often extend these laser treatments onto the arms if needed to combat sun damage in this area as well.
Hollowing of the hands is best treated with fillers.
There are several different fillers that can be used and the best filler choice is often dependent upon several factors. Fat injections are a great method of treating hands. The stem cells in the fat not only camouflage large veins, visible tendons and bony structures, but they also cause a smoothing of the skin and improvement in fine lines in a superior manner above the other synthetic fillers. Hyaluronic acids, such as Juvaderm, Belotero and Restylane can also be used for those who either don’t have enough fat or those who don’t want to go through a bigger procedure. Radiesse is also a great filler in the hands. The opaque nature and robustness of the product is great for those who need more volumization. For all of these fillers,I utilize a unique cannula technique to obtain superior results and decrease the risk of bruising.
