Juvederm® for Facial Volume Enhancement

As we grow older and wiser, we must accept the inevitable; the aging process becomes very visible, especially upon our skin. But what really causes skin to age? What are the precise causes? Once we know these causes, we may be able to take steps to slow or even reverse the process.

Aging Skin

Over time, your skin will change due to the environment, nutrition, genetic makeup and other factors. However, the largest factor in aging skin is exposure to sunlight. This is immediately apparent when you compare parts of your skin that get regular sun exposure to parts that do not.

Natural skin pigments offer some degree of protection against the aging effects of sunlight. People who are fair-skinned and blue-eyed tend to have more age-related skin damage than those with darker skin.

When you age, the outer layer of your skin becomes thinner, although the number of skin cell layers stays the same. The number of melanocytes begins to decrease. These cells are responsible for adding pigment to your skin. Aging skin appears more pale, thinner and translucent. Age spots or liver spots may develop in areas regularly exposed to the sun.

You can also expect changes in your skin’s connective tissue to develop. It will become less elastic and weaker. The loss of sub-surface fat also leads to lost facial volume.

Hyaluronic Acid

One often overlooked aspect of aging skin is the loss of a substance called hyaluronic acid. This vital substance is produced by our own bodies, but less is available as we age. Hyaluronic acid is important to youthful skin because it acts as a sponge, soaking up water molecules and plumping the skin. A loss of hyaluronic acid leads to skin that is less hydrated and wrinkled.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectables that help to renew the skin. Many of them contain hyaluronic acid to replace that which is lost due to the aging process. Each filler consists of a gel containing hyaluronic acid. After the treatment, the patient’s skin will be more hydrated and have less wrinkles. Fine lines and wrinkles will be filled in, while deeper ones will become more shallow and less noticeable.

What is Juvederm®?

Juvederm® is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler for facial volume enhancement. Only one treatment results in smoother, fuller skin lasting up to one year. The product is formulated using HYLACROSS technology, which creates a smoother gel than other products.

Another advantage that Juvederm® has over other dermal fillers is that it contains lidocaine. This is an anesthetic that increases patient comfort during their treatment.

Most patients are pleasantly surprised to learn that treatment with Juvederm® requires little to no downtime. The procedure is fast, safe and effective.
