Mature adults often experience mild wrinkling of the skin due to sun exposure, pollutants, and loss of collagen production. Some discoloration can occur as well, especially on the face.

Resurfacing procedures remove the uppermost levels of the skin, allowing new growth to take place. Chemical peel treatment is one of the most effective means of stimulating new, healthier skin growth.

After a chemical peel, skin tone becomes more even, with fewer fine-line wrinkles.

We perform this procedure on patients who wish to rejuvenate their facial appearance without the need for deep-level invasive surgery.

What Chemical Peels Treat

This cosmetic procedure is used to improve the overall skin tone and texture. Peels are effective for reducing the appearance of small wrinkles, crow’s feet near the eyes and mouth, visible scars that are shallow in depth, acne scars, and age spots.

Chemical peels can also even out targeted skin surface tone, such as darkened areas where freckles accumulate. Skin tone is improved because the new growth is smoother and more supple.

The new skin cells are not affected by damage endured by the skin that is removed during and after the peeling process.

How a Chemical Peel is Performed

Before performing a chemical peel, we schedule a consultation with our patient and go over the details of how the procedure will produce an improved facial appearance.

Depending on the patient’s skin tone and the amount of discoloration and wrinkling, we may schedule several treatment sessions, spaced out over a period of one to two months.

During the procedure, the patient’s face is washed thoroughly, and then a solution is applied using sponges or pads.

The chemical removes the uppermost level of the epidermis. Some reddening occurs, similar to the symptoms of mild sunburn.

After Treatment

Over the next few days, the skin dries up and begins to peel away. Unlike a sunburn, however, the lower skin layers are not affected.

The skin eventually falls off and is replaced by a newer layer to tissue. During this period of time, we may advise our patients to wear sunscreen or a moisturizing salve.

The process can be repeated several weeks later, with most individuals attaining the desired look after about three or four sessions.

The total recovery time after each session is about seven days, but normal activities can be resumed at once.

If a deeper peel treatment is required to work on severe scarring discoloration or to smooth out skin sags, a more aggressive, medium-depth peel treatment may be necessary.
