How the Treatment Works

Fraxel produces thousands of tiny, deep columns in your skin known as micro- thermal zones.  This treatment penetrates deeply into the dermis to help your skin shed old epidermal pigmented cells and stimulate new collagen production.  After your first Fraxel laser treatment, you will begin to feel the difference in your skin, with notable improvement in the quality, tone, and texture of the skin.

How long is each Fraxel treatment?

The duration of each treatment is approximately half an hour45 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.

What is the recovery and downtime like after Fraxel?

Patients will experience a mild sunburn sensation for about 1 hour following the treatment and then virtually no discomfort.  The skin will have a pinkish tone for 4- to 7 days.  This is a normal sign that the skin is healing.  Small dots called MENDS will form on the treated areas which will gently flake off in the following 3- to 7 days depending upon the area and strength of the treatment.  Swelling is minimal and generally resolves in a few days.

When will I see results after Fraxel ?

Improvement in pigmentation is typically seen when the skin has healed.  However, collagen production and improvement in texture will take some time.  Over the following weeks, the body will repair the deeper tissues that have been affected by the Fraxel laser, producing beneficial changes with a healthy appearance. You will begin to feel the difference in your skin as it gradually becomes softer, smoother, and fresher, improving the quality, tone, and texture of the skin. While improvement is seen with one treatment, some patients prefer to have multiple treatments for even greater results.  Your provider will discuss with you the expected outcsomes of the different treatments

Recovery

Most patients are able to resume normal activities immediately following the procedure, although for about 24 hours after a Fraxel laser treatment there may be a tight sensation in the skin, almost a sunburn-like feeling, and some swelling. The skin may also darken temporarily and become crusty, but this is a normal part of the process.

Once it flakes off, glowing skin will be revealed underneath. The skin will be pinkish for 4-7 days, and this is a normal sign that the skin is healing. The skin may also take on a bronze appearance that lasts anywhere from 3-10 days, depending on the treatment area.

The use of a moisturizer and sunscreen will mask the appearance of flaking. It’s important to avoid exercise, hot water, and saunas for 48-72 hours, and only use hydrating skin products — no exfoliants or scrubs. Avoid picking at the skin.

Results

Over the following weeks, the body will repair the deeper tissues that have been affected by the Fraxel laser, producing beneficial changes with a healthy appearance. You’ll begin to feel the difference in your skin as it gradually becomes softer, smoother, and fresher, improving the quality, tone, and texture of the skin. Clinical studies show best effects after 3-5 sessions, 4-8 weeks apart.
