How Kybella Works

Because Kybella is a cosmetic injectable, it requires no general anesthesia or incisions — just a series of injections. When injected into target areas of the body, Kybella permanently destroys fat cells. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they are eventually flushed out of the body (over a few weeks) through the lymphatic system.

What To Expect During Treatment

Before treatment begins, the area will be cleansed and a topical anesthetic will be applied to keep you comfortable during the injections (approximately 10-50 at a time). Treatments usually take around 10 minutes, and afterward the area will be dressed in a compression bandage to help with healing. Although Kybella may require multiple treatments, once the desired results have been reached, you will not need maintenance sessions.

Downtime with Kybella

One of the best things about Kybella is that it requires very minimal downtime, as opposed to longer recovery periods that a more invasive procedure would demand. You may experience some side effects which can include swelling, discomfort, bruising, itching, numbness, redness, and/or formation of firmness at the injection sites. If any of these side effects develop, we recommend using a cold compress or ice pack on the area for about 20 minutes. Most Kybella patients need about two days of downtime.
