For many, the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots is a dreadful thing. It is seen as a passage from youth to middle age. The skin is not as supple and has become thinner in certain regions of the face. Crow’s feet, smile lines, frown lines, and darkened areas caused by sun exposure all have a negative impact on one’s confidence and self-esteem. At Grossman Dermatology, we use the latest in anti-aging treatments for our patients, and one of our most popular and talked-about procedures is the Thermage® facial lift. As a skin-tightening and rejuvenating treatment, Thermage® is a revolutionary alternative to injections, abrasive resurfacing and cosmetic surgery.

A Non-Invasive Heating and Cooling Treatment

Thermage® uses radiofrequency energy to heat targeted areas just beneath the skin. The tissues beneath the lower dermal levels are supportive in nature, and this is where collagen production occurs. The fibers at this level tighten and smooth out the skin. As we age, the production of collagen decreases and the result is saggy skin. Wrinkles in the forehead, drooping chins and cheeks, and fine lines around the mouth and eyes are all the result of less firm skin.

The Thermage® treatment procedure involves the use of a specialized instrument that delivers radiofrequency pulses of energy to targeted areas. The epidermis is not affected because the frequencies of energy used are not absorbed by the upper skin.

Modern Thermage® treatment devices have a cooling energy burst setting as well. When used by an experienced dermatologist, the instrument can produce a spread of heating and cooling bursts. This not only keeps the patient comfortable, but it also prevents overheating of the tissue.

What Patients Can Expect

We provide all our customers with a full consultation that includes details on how the Thermage® treatment schedule is designed. The treatment itself begins with a cooling down of the facial area where the energy is to be dispersed. The heat pulses follow, alternated with cooling bursts.

When the treatment tip is placed against the skin, heat energy causes a vibration in the underlying tissues. This stimulates regrowth and also increases the production of collagen. A final cryogen delivery soothes the treated area. The entire procedure lasts about 25 minutes.

No downtime is experienced after the Thermage® treatment is completed. We may apply a soothing salve on the face, and we recommend that our patients avoid direct sunlight for several days after each session. Depending on the severity of the wrinkles, the thickness of the skin, and the total surface area to be treated, several sessions may be scheduled.

Long-Lasting Results

Since collagen production is increased after the treatment, patients report firmer, tighter skin. In areas where the skin is thinnest, particularly around the perimeter of the eyes, collagen production means a stretching of the skin but also a thicker support for the epidermis. Forehead wrinkles become much less visible. When used on the belly area, the Thermage® treatment smoothes out larger sag lines because the skin has been stretched by the underlying support fibers.
